Physics Experiment 1: Relative Motion in One Dimension

The purpose of this lab is to study motion relative to a moving reference frame. The speed of the red PAScar (see Fig. 1) as measured by the Motion Sensor at the far right, is not the same as the speed measured by the Motion Sensor located on the moving Motorized Cart. This "relative velocity" of the red car is measured directly by the Motion Sensor and compared to the expected value.

The Photogates measure the speed of the PAScar at two places on the inclined track. As the Photogates are moved closer together, the average speed of the cart is calculated over decreasing intervals of distance. In the limit that this interval goes to zero, the average speed approaches the value of the cart's instantaneous speed.

Physics Experiment 3: Position and Velocity

The purpose of this experiment is to investigate the relationship between position and velocity. A Motion Sensor is used to measure the position of the motorized cart on the track. Graphs of position vs. time are created, and the velocity is calculated by measuring the slopes of these graphs. Three different scenarios are implemented to investigate the differences between constant velocity, average velocity, and instantaneous velocity.

This lab uses a Motion Sensor to measure the motion of a motorized cart and a fan cart. Graphs of position and velocity are analyzed for constant velocity, and constant acceleration. The output from the 850 interface is used to control the speed of the motorized cart.
